Ben and Bridie Shields
Ben Shields served in the RAF for 34 years, enjoying postings around the world. He left the Service in 1994, looking forward to retirement in Scotland with his wife, Bridie.
However, in 2001 Bridie was clinically diagnosed with dementia. Her symptoms began slowly, but her condition has deteriorated to the extent that she no longer recognizes Ben, and requires 24 hour care and attention. Ben is now her fulltime carer.
We assisted Ben through a grant of £20,000 for housing adaptations which make it much easier for him to provide the care Bridie needs.
“The extension is absolutely ideal,” said Ben. “I can’t express enough how chuffed I am with it and the garden is so much better. The work we’ve had done has taken a great deal of the stress out of our lives – for that the RAF Benevolent Fund has my utmost thanks.”
