Joanna Martin
Joanna Martin was looking forward to a second tour of Iraq when she suffered a life-changing accident. During routine training Joanna fell 20 feet from a cargo net and suffered a spinal injury. She is now paralyzed from the chest downwards.
Since the accident, Joanna has tackled the changes in her life with resolve, but after purchasing a bungalow to move into, she was confronted with significant extra costs to make necessary disabled adaptations.
It was then that she was put in contact with the RAF Benevolent Fund. Our Director for Scotland, Bob Kemp, visited Joanna at the Erskine home in Bishopton and talked to her about her needs. He reported back to our welfare department, who quickly arranged a grant towards the costs of adapting her home.
“The help I’ve received from the RAFBF has been great,” said Joanna: “these were absolutely essential adaptations and everyone has been so kind and helpful throughout. I am really thrilled to be living independently again.”
