Karen Burton

After she left the RAF, Karen Burton’s son Ruari was diagnosed as Autistic.

Karen found it very hard to find the time and money to care for the demands of an autistic child. Then a friend in the local area approached the RAF Benevolent Fund on Karen’s behalf.  After examining her case, we agreed to cover the costs of some basic household items and general needs expenses to ease the pressure.

We went a step further when Karen heard about a centre in the United States with a phenomenal record of helping children like Ruari. We paid for Karen and Ruari’s flights. This was an excellent trip for mother and son, as Ruari made great progress – after the visit he called Karen “Mummy” for the first time.

“I don’t like to imagine where my son and I would be if the RAFBF hadn’t helped” she said.
