To mark our 90th anniversary we have released these striking archive adverts, which the RAF Benevolent Fund placed in newspapers and magazines during and after World War Two.

The adverts present a fascinating window into the past, when a country in its moment of greatest peril still found the charitable spirit to support the young men fighting a new kind of war in the air. They also illustrate the lingering impact the RAF had on British lives in the post war years, as a nation eager to move on into brighter days still found time to honour those who ‘gave everything’ so that they could enjoy that future. As one of the adverts says so poignantly: “Time effaces the material scars of battle – but not the human ones”.

This is where the RAFBF’s work was so necessary, and where we continue to be needed to this day.
