Alan Burkinshaw - Relate
Alan Burkinshaw is the manager of Relate Oxfordshire, one of three Relate centres which began trialling a new partnership with the RAF Benevolent Fund in March 2008. RAF personnel and/or their partners can get six sessions paid for by the RAF Benevolent Fund. They can have a consultation at the Relate centre or confidentially on the station, where the service runs out of the Chaplaincy. Since the scheme began, the Oxfordshire service has seen 42 couples.
Alan said:
“We get excellent comments from the RAF. Once recent client said, ‘It’s the best thing I have ever done.’ The great thing about the service is we give people a non-threatening environment in which to discuss and improve their relationship. This is often the first time they had this opportunity in a long time, and it can have extremely positive results.”
As the trial has proven successful, the scheme is now being rolled out across all RAF stations. You can read more about the RAFBF/Relate partnership on the main website at http://www.rafbf.org/howwehelp/relate.htm
