The Guinea Pig Club
The Guinea Pig Club was formed in June 1941 by 39 aircrew patients of renowned plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe, while they were undergoing reconstructive surgery for burn injuries sustained in their aircraft.
“I left the RAF in 1945 with both legs amputated, third-degree burns, a crush fracture of the spine, maxillofacial damage, both arms broken and the ring finger missing on my left hand,” recalled Guinea Pig Club Chairman, Sam Gallop. “What saved me and eased my path to independence was the donation from the RAF Benevolent Fund - a car and three years’ running costs. The RAFBF really has been such a great help and inspiration to us and to our families.”
On 13 February 2007, representatives of the Guinea Pig Club presented Sir Rob Wright, Controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund, with a £50,000 donation.
